What do I do if I only have one quail left?

Almost three years ago, I bought six quail chicks and raised them. Unfortunately, a lot happened to them as adults: one was injured and died from her injuries, one was somehow taken by a marten, and two others were males and injured each other and the others, so with a heavy heart, I gave them to friends who have a huge group of quail.

So, there are two left, living happily together in a large aviary for about 8-9 months. I love them like I love my own children—but what if one dies? It's illegal to keep only one, and it's both immoral and cruel. I can't buy "new" ones either. What if the remaining one doesn't get along with them? But I probably wouldn't be able to handle it mentally if I gave them to friends—I already suffer from depression.

Luckily, both are still alive and hopefully for a long time, but I need a backup plan—in this situation, I'll be too panicked and sad, if not even depressed. That's why I need help!

Hi,

I can feel too well that the animals do you well and you do not have any stress with them on the other hand – I feel the same way.

It’s great that you’re already thinking.

Is there a small animal breeding association with you? Please contact them and ask them. After my experience, you get great tips there. In your situation, it may be too great to do it yourself. Do you know someone who can take the phone call for you? Write a small list with your questions before, then your help can go through the points with the breeder.

You can also find information here, for example: https://www.wachtel-wissen.de/haltung/vergesellschaft/wachtelgruppen-vergesellschaftn/

I had the problem that a hen and a cock were left. So the cock had only one hen to kick and she looked really bad. Therefore, I got 2 more hens (via the small animal breeding association – one gets them there in general very cheap because they are “combat animals”, i.e. animals that do not meet the expectations of the breeder).

I was recommended to offer as much hiding as possible with as much space as possible. The hiding possibilities must not be dead ends. I have taken cartons from the supermarket in which the 12 l milk / drinks are always packed. This is free and easy to exchange. After a short time I had a beautiful harmonious group.

But you must make sure that you don’t have several cocks, that’s not good.

You good improvement and great success in socialization!

I think yours are unfounded. Once read the guards are very compatible with each other. It must not be a rooster. And you don’t need it, do you? So, get two more hens…..

I think you should get yourself new. Otherwise, you’ll give it to your acquaintances and keep looking over. It’s hard, but it’s important for the guards.

Good luck!

the guards are like their own children for them. Is there a solution?
