On is a so-called change-preposition that pulls the tripod if a location is specified, or the battery if a direction is specified. The question is: does it mean

  • Where did he…? = Dativ = on his… or
  • Where did he place…? = battery = on his…

My question here Where? more natural to sound.

Both can be correct, depending on what is specifically meant. I would like to of Shoulder” say because it is more common.

whether after the verb β€œplace” Dativ or battery comes?

both are possible, seeDuden – The dictionary of linguistic doubts 16:

β€˜2. After placing in, placing on, placing under or above, both the battery and the Dativ can stand.
