Student work experience in the back office at EY – does it make sense or would you rather go straight into auditing?

Hello everyone,

I'm currently deciding whether to apply for a student trainee position in the back office at EY. My question is, does it make sense to gain some initial experience there, or should I instead try to get a position in the audit department directly?

What do you think? Can you learn a lot in the back office that will be useful for a career in auditing later on, or would it be better to start in auditing right away?

I look forward to hearing your opinions and experiences!

I can only say it from the “customer view” when we are checked.

Colleagues coming directly into the audit are stimulating. You have little knowledge, especially not if you deviate from the 0815 standard in operation and yes, if you wanted to exploit this ignorance and conceal things. The problem: Most of them think they had eaten wisdom with spoons, only because they had top notes in their studies, but they know zero in their working life and practice.

If people were already in the back office, they usually bring more pre-knowledge, which makes it easier for us, because we do not have to explain or clarify all the principles. Yes, even then the customer that they had worked there had something different and therefore the knowledge does not fit 1 to 1, but is clearly closer to it than to people who start directly from the university.

Especially if you have groups of people who are all started in the audit, i.e. both the freshman and the “experienced” examiners (sometimes acuh had only one or two passes before they rise and supervise new ones) all know neither the practice nor the “extending work of the audit”, there are some very noticeable audits.

But yes, audit is higher and if you want to go safely, it could look better on the resume to start directly drt.
