This cannot be found in an approach with just 100 years of recording history. To this day we know stories of outstanding singers who have learned some centuries ago.

We can only judge about a time since the late 1910s. On a long list of candidates there are Fritz Wunderlich, Luciano Pavarotti, Maria Callas and Gundula Janowitz.

The list was created by a jury of 179 people, whose members are either musicians or producers. The list has a disadvantage: it is one-sided, as it focuses only on the field of U-music and thus does not appear a single classical singer.

Very subjective question. Jussi Björling with the tenors.
(that would also agree with Pavarotti, he said once he was compared with Björling: “Please, I’m only human”)

But there are and gave so many excellent tenor…
(Windgassen catches me spontaneously)

It’s easier for me to find women. Maria Callasher “Medea” alone made her musically immortal. And this rather little-known composer makes this unforgettable (ais La Wally by Alfredo Catalani):

Many great singers have died before sound recording. The greatest singers I heard so far:

Rock

Ronnie James Dio: Stargazer https://youtu.be/YmJIccPWnEk

Soul

Sam Cooke: A Change Is Gonna Come https://youtu.be/OKy-xh-Ag6E

Opera

Enrico Caruso: Vesti la giubba https://youtu.be/Rq4VZhZM_I

Giacomo Lauri-Volpi: esultate https://youtu.be/a2x-S9S599s

There are so many. But the music of Agnes Obel touched me.

It may have been the smallest singer at Statur, Caruso and Joseph Schmidt.

You seem to have forgotten Thomas Quasthoff.

Quasthoff is a great baritone (I had one, two times the luck to hear him in the Elbphilharmonie) – but he doesn’t play in the league of a caruso.

Quasthoff is said to have broken out once in laughter when a moderator called him (body size 1.34m) once as “one of the largest singers in Germany”…

You seem to have forgotten Thomas Quasthoff, a great bass baritone:

Freddie Mercury!

But otherwise, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Axl Rose, Luciano Pavarotti,Andrea Boccelli, Elton John, Sting and Bruce Springsteen would fall into my mind.

This is actually impossible to say because it is largely a matter of taste.

To get out of the way possible dispute, here my favorite:
