Samweis Gamgee. He was the only one who could not be seduced by the ring, who could resist the dark infinity and turned the ring right into his barriers. Next to Tom Bombadil.

He also carried Frodo up the mountain and kept him on the right path.

Sam is the true hero of history and he destroyed the ring. Frodo and Gollum did not want to destroy him in the end, but to claim for himself, Sam was the only one who had the will in this situation to destroy the ring.

Teamwork.

If you interpret the book in a certain way, the ring has destroyed Sauron by destroying itself:

Frodo hurled him from himself and stood up begging.
“Now! Lower!«, he pointed out, gripping his chest with his hand, so that he held the ring hidden under the leather shirt clinging. “Nieder, you creep, get out of my way! Your time is over. You can’t betray or kill me.”
Suddenly, as at the edge of the Emyn Muil, Sam saw the two opponents with other eyes. A form groomed to the ground, barely more than the shadow of a living, now completely beaten and destroyed, yet filled with an abhorrent greed and anger; and before it stood, all compassion now unrestricted, a figure in white, and on the chest she held a fiery wheel.
Their predominant voice seemed to come out of the fire itself. »Hinweg with you! Don’t bother me anymore! If you ever touch me again, you shall be thrown into the fire of fate.”

Sixth Book – Third Chapter: The Destiny Mountain

The fiery wheel seems to be the ring and here he seals his fate, the Gollum will touch him again and this prophecy becomes truth.

Sam. Without that, the Frodo softener would be already in the first part
