Which tax class(es) apply to unemployment benefits?

Hello, as a higher earner I am currently in tax class 3 and my husband is in 5.

He'll soon be unemployed, so we're mentioning a change in tax brackets. I'm planning to become self-employed next year. What combination would make sense under these circumstances?

Thanks!

The tax class has exactly 0 effects on the amount of the total IT to be paid. It only regulates under-year advance payments under the wage tax.

So if you want to keep the repayment low, choose 4 or 5 for you. Your husband has no tax class from the time of unemployment. The same applies to self-employment.

Change to the 3 before you get unemployed.

The ALG 1 is then higher.

Otherwise the Stkl has no influence, but here it is. You’ll get less than five. In self-employment, it doesn’t matter, otherwise you can get back too much paid taxes

The person who threatens unemployment or other earnings should choose tax class 3.

If you are self-employed next year and your husband continues to have no work, no one has a wage tax class.
