Which region of the USA is best for a year abroad?
Hi, I have the amazing opportunity to choose a region where I'll spend my year abroad. But I don't know which region to choose! I like both warmth and rain, and what I especially like are very big cities and the sea. Which region should I choose?
- SOUTH EAST (North & South Carolina, Georgia, Florida)
- NORTH EAST (all small states above Pennsylvania and New Jersey and these two)
- WEST COAST (Washington State, California, Oregon)
So…. Now please answer, it doesn't have to be long, and you can give reasons, but it's not a must!
Your personal success does not decide so much to the region and not to your organization, be aware that only a few agencies that cheat on the German market also employ actual employees in the USA.
Almost all organisations operating in Germany cooperate with one of the 3 partner organizations available in the USA.
They have to do that because US organization sponsors the Visa (J-1 Visa) for exchange students.
Do you really ask what is important to you?:
In the end, it is important that you/you feel comfortable, you get all the questions answered and you actually get into a programDatewill.
Especially if the exchanges and host families become less, because of the economic crisis, this is the most important point!
What do you think is where nice host families live, who take exchange students for a year for free? If you’re cutting the region, you’re gonna make your placement opportunities uncommon and unnecessarily, as you’re not looking for the whole country.
Exchange will be very difficult due to economic crisis the next few years. That was the same after the financial crisis in 2008.

My recommendations: no regional choice.
so I personally met California as very pleasant and south East as not so great.
New York was too hectic to me and I wasn’t even more northern.
My favourite would be the area around San Franzisko
Thank you, but why didn’t you find South east so great?
There people were only friendly when they were in tourists.
I was, for example, in a gas station there the service didn’t speak a word to me.
