Which camera is best for photographing the Milky Way?

Hey, I wanted to ask if anyone has any buying tips for a very good camera (budget: <3000€) with which I can take outstanding pictures, not only of the Milky Way, but also of the Northern Lights?

Polar lights also go with APS-C and kit lens with a f 3.5. I would not have taken much less, otherwise no continuous sharpness is achieved. You photograph not only the polar lights, but you integrate landscape (preferably not the local garden or the window). Same with the Milky Way. Otherwise, it’s too boring….you’ll probably need less focal length at Milky Way.

It is recorded, for example, with ISO 2500, f 3.5 and 5 sec. Camera an old Fuji X-T20. The polar light was very high. Important is a tripod and what else you need next to the camera. But don’t do anything about magic, no matter how expensive the camera is.

For polar lights, an older full format camera (even DSLR) and a high-light wide-angle lens ranges. You will be used around the 1000 euros. There are also things like remote triggers, tripods and objective heating. If you have fun in astro photography, it will be more expensive if you need a tracking for the camera and a lens with a higher focal length.

The professionals take their photos because of their knowledge and not the technology.

The factor that delivers the best photos is primarily behind the camera. Similar to piano playing, it is not enough to own a concert piano to play a great song, but it requires a lot of practice.

Technically very good low-light cameras are already far below 1000€ such as an EOS 6D (used ~300€). For this purpose, a light-strong wide angle such as EF 16-35mm 2.8L II.

better photos with better equipment

There’s a mistake. The body is (almost) unimportant, the objective is not. The properties of a modern camera such as IBIS or autofocus do not need at all. Whether there’s a mirror in it or not, it’s also unimportant, as it is photographed in the Live View. Long-term exposure on the tripod takes place without stabilization on the part of lens and body, AF is not required.

The reworking with stacking is one of the key points you should not forget. No button is expected to press and everything is done.

Typical representatives of Canon (here I know myself) would be EOS 6D Mark I or Mark II, EOS 5D Mark III and better. They will be thrown into the market.

However, if you are to reproduce other motifs in addition to astro photography, other requirements for body and lens arise.
