host a website?

Hello, I want to create a website or a forum, but what do I need for it? I can't really find anything online. I need to buy a domain. Then HTML, CSS. But then I also need a database for user data and such. Could someone help me?

I need to buy a domain

Domains can not be bought, but can only be registered for one year (for registration fee). This registration must then be renewed annually, otherwise the domain expires and can be used by others.

then html, css. but then I still need a database for users

You certainly do not want to reinvent the wheel if there are already software such as Woltlab, XenForo, Vanilla Forum, vBulletin, Simple Machines, Simple:Press or plugins for WordPress (WP Discussion Board or wvForo), which already provide you with a finished basic system and only have to be customized with AddOns/Plugins and Templates/Themes.

And so you can play on your own PC as a test platform and prepare it experimentally there before transferring it to a web server. (Xampp/Lampp or the individual components Apache, MySQL, PHP etc. contained in it can be installed yourself and then already has its own web server in the local network.)

You definitely need more than “domain, html, css and a database”.

If you just want to run a free forum, there are free providers (with advertising) like:

https://www.xobor.de/

But there are also forum software, which is issued under a license, but contains a lot more of features and, of course, does not contain any advertising such as:

https://xenforo.com/

However, there are also self-hosted variants that are also free, but there are a lot more need for know-how, how to put up something like that. An example would be:

You could use finished systems as the others wrote, programming yourself makes no sense at all.

Don’t be unnecessarily confusing but even if you grab a web hosting at All Inkl for 6€/month and say we install WordPress you will still need to learn WordPress or other forums software.

This can take time and if you don’t have an eye for something like that, it won’t look nice what you created. This only comes with time and if the software doesn’t learn properly you make mistakes.

If you’re serious, you’d rather order a web developer for the setup and web designer to turn off advertising or use affiliate links to get back some money.

Would also advise you to have a lawyer check your page on GDPR compliance and whether you can create legal texts for imprint and privacy policy.

But don’t wonder if you’re standing in the negative and don’t make you too big hopes, should make you the first fun to run/conduct/modernize the site.

Nevertheless, once you earn a cent, you’d have to register a business with the trade office.

Financially, this is very rare, alternatively you could build on a Facebook group or Twitter page.

In the simplest case, you use a forum software (e.g. Discourse, Flarum, MyBB, phpBB, XenForo, etc.). Look into the respective documentation, what is necessary. There are also SaaS solutions for some such applications (e.g. XenForo).

On the other hand, you need at least:

  • A domain
  • A web server that can play your application
  • A database
  • A mail server
  • Your web application
  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS and at least one programming language (e.g. PHP, Python, Ruby, etc.) and possibly an associated webframework (e.g. Django, Laravel, Rails, …), which simplifies project structuring

Look for Webhosting Services (e.g. IONOS, netcup, PixelX, Strato, …), because you can quickly tap several of the above points.

If you really want to develop your forum from scratch, you need to spend a lot of time. I just wrote a content managment system and needed almost 1 year to the stable release. For a forum you need longer. And when it comes to securing, you have to wait the software regularly & bring it to the latest. This is called the ongoing development that will never be completed.

Recommendation: Hosting at e.g. DomainFactory

  1. You rent a domain (approx. 5€/m)
  2. You buy an SSL certificate (20-40€/y)
  3. You buy a web hosting (with a domain you only have a name – no server with a database) (10€/m)
  4. Conveniently install & set up forum software in DomainFactory-Backend

I think you’re paying a little too much.

All Inkl All in One Webhosting Pandt: with database, unlimited SSL, 3 domains / Unlimited Sub Domains, email mailboxes, Php , Software/Cms Installer.

All for 5€ a month or 6€ with Ssl and for 8€ you get more domains.

It is not the best or has all the possibilities like a Vps but for the beginning, this is completely enough of the resources/performance and is scalable later presented on a serious hosting provider with great support and 3 months.
I’m sure there’s no better deals, but I don’t want to look for everything.

You will only need Php or software like WordPress

It was just a rough rounding. I couldn’t guess about my 3 domains.

Well, then it’s good, just want to lower the entry barriers to the questioner again. With 72€/y he is already there or if he uses 1€ IONOS Strato sample year he can test everything for 2 years 24 months.

Anyone who does not make any more profit or use out of the cost draws from the hosting should better give up or submit to web developers.

If you want to make a whole forum online, you need to take a lot of attention. Data protection is also moderate and so. I would advise you to seek professional help
