I bought a new pillow filled with 100% polyester. Do I need to wash it before first use? The label says it can only be washed in a washing machine with a capacity of at least 7 kg. Unfortunately, mine only has a capacity of 5 kg. What would you recommend?

My girlfriend caught the outer pocket of her down jacket on something. The jacket ripped open quite badly, exposing the down filling. The tear is right next to the seam. Can this be repaired? Or does the jacket have to go to the trash? Clothing collection is probably out of the question.
