I assume that like the other disciples, he did not realize that Jesus was killed. He had lost everything he had set. That’s why he invented the resurrection with the other apostles. With success!

He would have been a liar if he had known or had been convinced that there is no God and still preaches faith in God.

Many of Jesus’ disciples have been persecuted and killed, they had no interest in simply thinking about religion. They had no political power either.

He was a disciple/student with human mistakes. After his vocation by the Spirit of God, he wrote in his letters the absolute truth of God. No liar.
