I'm trying to start writing stories again at the moment, but I don't have any good ideas yet…
Right now, I need a popular place (or something similar) that has a terrible history, and everyone who knows about it must be persecuted (it's supposed to be fictional, of course). Anything can happen there except magic or something similar.
Please have some ideas for me, I'm a bit desperate.

In a totalitarian state, different scenarios would come to me.
The ruler or rulers have killed (or captured) opponents of their regime somewhere to consolidate their rule of violence. There is no press freedom, everything is controlled by the state. Who knows too much or talks too much is being persecuted and is to be done by the state police (or a secret intervention group).
Sorry, but no good conditions to write a story.
