What can you give a French host family?

I'm going on an exchange to France after the Easter holidays (I don't have an exchange partner because not enough people signed up, and I'm staying with a friend with a host family) and wanted to bring them a gift. We'll have to transport it on the bus, and it needs to be relatively long-lasting. We considered giving pretzels, but thought they would dry out on the trip… We wanted something special (good German or something similar), like Toffifee, because you can't buy those in France either. We also wanted to make something ourselves (pastries or something similar), but we don't really have any idea what to make… We also considered giving good German beer, but we're wondering if that's appropriate, or what if the family doesn't drink alcohol…
