What's wrong with Herbert?

Hello, I'd like to introduce you to my cactus, Herbert. It belongs to the Haageocereus family. I've owned it for over 15 years. Back then, I had a box of cacti in front of a house to take home. It's been with me ever since. Unfortunately, I recently had to repot it because my cats pushed it off the windowsill and the pot broke.

Now to my question. Herbert's bottom is brown and looks dried out. He's a lovely, lush green on top. He's had this discoloration for a few years. I read something online about sunburn in cacti. Is that possible?

According to my opinion, your Herbert is over. I’m tapping on rotten roots because it’s in the dense cup.

As there are still residual life at the top, which is not supplied via the broken roots, you can use a clean cut with a very sharp knife to save the dome and try to root on clean, moist cactus soil.

If Herbert ante mortem becomes a mother, then more air will be given to his children! Ideal is a clay pot with an airy substrate. It can stand on a plate or with sufficient wall spacing in a large cup.

I can’t exactly see if the pot has a drain, I can’t see if the bottom is mineral or just flower earth. I fear that this cactus from below faulted by too much wet and nutrient-rich soil

A cup is unsuitable as a planting vessel as long as you do not make holes in it.

Please top your Herbert in a real flowerpot with a neat drain and a mineral cactus ground
