Although there is a certain convention in the Internet protocols which standard ports they use (e.g. http Port 80, https Port 443), this is not mandatory.

The protocol is the format by communicating two programs while the port indicates which program on the device gets the data. Actually, the port does not indicate, but a program can ‘listen’ at a port to get the data sent there.

If you think about hardware at Ports, you have the physical interface. And the protocol regulates how data transmission is rendered.

A protocol is a communication rule, a port addresses the communication partner, i.e. a service (process).

Protocols = Rules for communication.

Ports = address points for specific services on a device.
