A linear accelerator is a device that accelerates charged particles, such as electrons or protons, on a straight path. A proton accelerator is specially designed to accelerate protons. However, both terms are sometimes used synonymously, since protons are also charged particles, and proton accelerators often contain linear components.

Not to say: Each synchrotron beam has started in a linear accelerator.
