What do squirrels like to eat?

A squirrel occasionally visits me on my balcony. I thought I could give the squirrel something to eat. So the question is: What's inexpensive and does squirrels like to eat?

Do squirrels like sunflower seeds?

Emphasis on cheap 😉

NaniW has already written what you can give to the squirrel. If you do it right, you can also feed the squirrel from your hand. When it comes to you, you can rub 2 walnuts in one hand. That sounds like another squirrel eats a walnut. When you get his attention, you’ll give him a nut out of your hand. When it gets used to taking nuts out of your hand, you can crack the nuts and offer the crumbs of the walnut on your hand. Then it can’t just grab the whole nut and get out of it, then it must stay on your hand and eat the little crumbs.

If I want to lure a squirrel from the tree, I just throw a nut in the air, but not directly in the direction of the squirrel. That’s not how it feels threatened. If the nut then falls to the ground, the squirrel recognizes the sound that has fallen down from above. It searches the nuts with the nose and when it found it, it goes a few meters further. There it eats the nuts. As it eats, I can get a little closer to him. While it eats, it can only focus on its nuts and does not really get what is going on around. I’m always feeding the squirrel only one nut, because with the second nut it’s already rich and disappears. That’s why it has to get the second nut out of my hand.

Here you can see how it works.

This was my first squirrel. I haven’t had a camera yet, and I just had a camera.

There are large buckets with nuts or peanuts to buy as bird feed. There are then one or even several kilos in there and it is not expensive. And it lasts forever.

Peanuts are not good because they are too fast.

Nuts and also bird food they like to eat. They can be seen more often at feed points. They eat eggs and young birds. When a nest is nearby you can see and hear the little singing birds sniff and cetern when a squirrel is there.

Hello

Suitable for feeding are nuts (shell nuts, walnuts..) Sunflower seeds, carrots, apples, grapes…

Here you can read some squirrels on the side of the WWF and how to feed them correctly:

Here the Eichhörnchenhilfe Berlin:

And the squirrel emergency call:

You eat everything that looks like nuts.

The cheapest are sunflower seeds. 1,50 Euro 3 kilos or something.

But they’re clear on their own.

But you can also make them tame that they get up to a meter.

I got a squirrel that visited me twice a day. Morning and evening. Contrary to the assertion that squirrels can be chased with mint because they don’t like the smell, mine is crazy about mint. It’ll be cleaned. With style and stems. Don’t worry. 😄 For this, even the nuts sometimes brought by the squirrel itself (for food on my balcony) remain. Next time.

Unfortunately not quite right. Almonds don’t go, because of the hydrocyanic acid

The squirrels had it very hard this winter, so feeding is a good thing.

Then please give a source of PETA. WWF says something else about this! What about animal cruelty?
