The idea that something still has to come after death is ultimately an assumption that originates from human thought. We have the need to imagine that there is something “after” but actually it doesn’t have to. From a physical perspective, there must be no life after death. It’s safe.
What happens to the mind is another question. Here a lot depends on how we define “spirit” at all. When the mind is our perceived identity, the question arises whether it can continue to exist without the brain that creates it. The question of what is left of us, or whether there is anything at all, is not so easy to answer.
