Why does aluminum foil turn black in caustic soda?

Hello, I know that iron and sulfur form FeS. However, today I was really wondering: Isn't iron sulfide a salt? If so, since the iron cation is 3+ and sulfur is 2-, shouldn't it be Fe2S3?
