Why are the federal states in eastern Germany still called “new federal states”?

That all happened 30 years ago, so we could stop referring to them as the "new federal states" all the time.

Hello, Best Observer.

It’ll always be that way, but without having a negative touch.

And, of course, this is also the power of habit. That is why we do not need to look at it politically at all, because it has no negative significance.

Greetings, Renate.

You’re right. But this term has become so natural that it is difficult for some people to stop saying that.

In any case, everyone knows what that means.

Well, they’re still newer than the other federal states.

There are also the southern and northern countries, or the city states that are often combined because they have similar views or problems and cooperate with each other. In principle, it doesn’t matter how to call them. It is more relevant that they differ greatly from the old Länder in many respects, which is why many statistics, or surveys are worth highlighting them separately.

In English, the late

Probably because this has not yet been banned by law – and even the Federal Government uses this distinction in its writings and notices.

In addition to this, the people who come from there tend to communicate that they originate from the “New Länder”.
Some do that because they are proud of their descent.
Others to explain that they now have a different background of life, so think differently, have different behaviors, other preferences and dislikes….or some of the experiences that the Western world does not have.

The whole thing has been 30 years ago, so it could be slow to call it “new Länder”.

It would be nice. But unfortunately, reality looks different. There are still many differences where you can still see this. Even the pensions between East and West are not the same today.

Here is a picture from the newspaper Freies Wort on the occasion of the day of German unity 2017, where one can see clearly the differences between East and West:

And even 5 years further, it doesn’t look much different…

You wouldn’t have thought about it 30 years ago, but there will be a few decades of clear differences, even because you didn’t take care of it actively.

You might also have to pay different salaries/pensions. Unfortunately, there are still differences.

Probably because there are still differences in pensions, etc.

Hello observers,

they still form a separate category with general differences to the rest. Most of them are not very enjoyable.

I said GDR until 1990 as a bad dog, now I say East zone again. I don’t want to offend anyone there. They didn’t pick it up like that.

Because they still play a special role. Otherwise, you could also say East Germany. However, some want to bypass East Germany, because for many, it still sounds like SED and dusty roads.

Because there are federal states who are 70 years old and others who are 30 years old.

I never call them that. Is a BL like any other.

Agreed.

Then we call them East Block countries….

Because it’s not wrong and because people are too slow to change.

Every federal state is different or would you say Hesse and Saarland are the same?

Just because things have such a strange and sometimes funny debate, are they not different? When you come to a village in the Odenwald, you don’t understand a word.

Because it’s the federal states that have joined the last.
