Why doesn't Win 11 like my data hard drive?
Hello everyone!
I have a strange problem with my 8TB data HDD and Win 11.
Win 11 itself is on an SSD, and I only use the large HDD occasionally as a backup for data; it is then connected via SATA.
The strange thing is that Windows 11 doesn't seem to like the HDD. After a while, it starts to rattle, and Explorer freezes. But only when idle.
The HDD is apparently turned off and then recognized again; again and again.
For example, if I play a media file from the HDD at the same time, the clicking stops and everything calms down. I can also work with Explorer at the same time.
All of these problems only occur on the Win 11 computer with the current system and previously on an older Win 11 version.
There are no such problems on a computer with identical hardware and Win 10.
Has anyone experienced something like this? Thanks for your help!
The motherboard is an older Asus, Bios Uefi, SSD brand new, Windows installation new and previously older Windows 11.
Hello,
then the 8TB is still converted to MBR and not to GPT.
But by doing so, all the stored data will flow,
if you just do it.
Take them out and connect them via USB.
Widows 11 shouldn’t run on an ASUS motherboard.
if you have not circumvented the restrictions.
And that’s how you build a SSD, and you set up the whole box.

Did MBR go up to 2 TB? Besides, it only plays a role at the start plate or not?
No, everything is relatively up-to-date and also formatted in GPT. But that should not be the problem either, as the bios lt. Asus can manage both simultaneously. Windows 11 runs without problems – the missing module could be retrofitted at Rev. 2.
Now what hard drive do you have?
Only HDDs and SSHDs clack.
Hansi
So the “Kiste” is completely new with SSD; the problem only concerns an 8TB HDD, which I occasionally bump into to secure the data or some old movie that’s on it.
Now
then the HDD is damaged.
Did she shake too much,
before she took the parking position?
Let’s go.
It may take a few hours.
Hansi
Okay!

I wouldn’t suspect that because the whole procedere on the same PC in the children’s room works smoothly with Win 10. So I hit the HDD there on Sata and everything works normal without clackers and skippers.
8TB HDD from Western Digital. The system mounting plate is an SSD.
I’d try to turn off the index for the hard drive. The rattle indicates that it is still used in a resting phase. And if you use them to play, the indexing is suppressed.

Sounds interesting! Did this happen – Windows has fought with strength, rotzefrech asserts: “Action not possible, device is not present”, although the hard drive of course was displayed at the same time in the Explorer, then still suspects I’m not an administrator… Windows as you know and love it;)
After restarting 2 times and clamping 1x, the indexing is now actually switched off and until now everything is quiet:)
well, that was easy;-)
Hello,
I would once be looking for a driver for Windows11 from the 8TB data manufacturer. Windows 11 is looking for the drivers but does not always use the best drivers.
If there is no direct search for drivers with the name of the hard drive on Google.
Best regards from Leipzig
Drivers for SATA hard drives?
You can find them for the SATA host adapter, but not for the hard drive. And there is the manufacturer of the host adapter (which is probably the mainboard manufacturer), not the manufacturer of the hard drive that only uses the SATA protocol.
Okay, thanks for correcting – I didn’t pay attention to the SATA.
But you can still search for other drivers of the mainboard.
WD apparently does not offer its own drivers anymore; you will finally get to the WD support page on a link to Microsoft.
Thank you.
Have you ever tried the Asmedia SATA Controller Driver?
https://www.asus.com/de/onlysupport/m5a99x_evo_r20/helpdesk_download/
Yes! the driver file installed by ASmedia is, however, actually the same that win 11 had in it; from 2015.
AMD chipset driver installed?
https://www.amd.com/de/support/chipsets/amd-9-series-chipsets/990x
According to Google, the board has a 990x chipset so the link should fit.
I’m not sure if I have AMD 6-Series chipset or higher… How do I find out?
8gb sata hard plate? how old is it? it will be over.
8 Terra Byte, my dear!

That makes sense
