The “production” of heat in animals depends on the volume, the “disposal” of the body surface. The greater this ratio, the better animals can keep themselves warm; with a small ratio of volume and surface, the body temperature remains relatively low.

In warmer areas animals absorb a lot of heat from the outside and have to radiate it again. Rather, they do not need to produce heat. Therefore, animals in warmer regions are also rather small.

This principle is based on Bergmannen Rule described.
