Lasers in size were more expensive than visible light from a diode.

However, the accuracy left to be desired, as well as the reaction speed and the functionality on surfaces such as glasses or without texture.

Today there is no more reason not to use a laser, since every optical mouse has a laser in the non-visible spectrum.

Red LEDs are cheap and easy to produce.

Cheap optical mice still shine red from the sensor.

More modern sensors use infrared LEDs.

The first laser diodes were red. Now it’s obviously also infrared, so you don’t see it anymore.

The diode makes a pattern on the table, and on the basis of the movements of the patterns it is calculated how the mouse moves.

Red is loading, green mouse is ready loaded and can be separated from the cable. GUTE computers still have mice today.
