Faith is a lean image of knowledge. The old religions of our ancestors, as well as some of those still practised today (e.g. Buddhism, Hinduism and Tantric Faith), go back to the pastures. Weden (or Veden) is the plural of Veda = knowledge. From the superhuman beings and energies described there, gods were created by the religions.
Anyway, this is the most obvious explanation for me. I always like to look for the origin/cause.
Furthermore, I do not think religions are madness. The worst thing seems to me much more to believe in nothing.
It may be that the church did not earlier enter that the earth is a sphere. But I was told at school that Christians had been persecuted for a certain period of time for long people who represented this claim.
But of course no one knows exactly what happened a few hundred years ago.

That’s not true. The legend that in the Middle Ages the earth was believed to be a disc was propagated mainly in the Renaissance but also later to underline the “awakening” from the dark Middle Ages. They knew at the latest since ancient Greece that the earth was a bullet. Christianity had e.g. Aristotle still likes. Evidences are e.g. the Reichsapfel, who portrays the domination of Christianity over the world (crease on bullet).
There was no planet in the church before! Didn’t you have been raised Christian? The earth has been a disc. Like the well-funded “Flat Earth Movement” today propagates again.
It is quite a question that the balls, at the highest point, had or have a function.
