Why does another airline often fly for the original airline?

I once flew from Munich to Moscow in 2019. I booked the flight with Lufthansa. However, it wasn't Lufthansa that flew, but the Russian airline Aeroflot. Why does another airline often fly for the original airline?

In order to simply express it, Lufthansa commissions airlines other than subcontractors.

Other reason: Because of excessive damage to your own fleet or short-term failure of your own machine, another airline helps. Better a rental machine of another airline than a flight failure.

Many flights are Code Sharing with other airlines. But usually this is already apparent when booking who will perform the flight.
For example, for flights from London to the USA, I always book British Airways and also make sure that BA’s flight is not operated by American Airways (shows it directly in the selection)

This is often offered and this is also good – for example, Miles & More customers can still earn miles from Lufthansa even if Lufthansa does not even use the route. Normally, however, this is always evident when booking which airline actually sets the flyer at the end, see the following example:

Because Lufthansa has no capacity for this and therefore serves other airlines.

It is a common approach to all major airlines.
