Warum blinken die?

In Österreich sind in den Tunneln in Fahrtrichtung rechts rote und links weiße Fahrbahnbegrenzungsleuchten auf den Bordsteinen angebracht, welche eigentlich permanent leuchten. Auf der Heimfahrt heute sahen wir in einem Tunnel, daß beide Reihen blinkten und nicht permanent leuchteten. Weiß jemand, welchen Grund das hat? Es war auch kein Stau oder Ähnliches auf dieser Strecke…

When the limiting lamps flash, there is some danger in the tunnel. In parallel, the traffic lights are also yellow flashing or even red, further things such as overhaul ban or reduction of speed is also possible.

Since this mode must be deactivated again, it can be that the operator in the traffic management center has forgotten it.

Special care is required. Probably the speed limit was also lower than otherwise in this tunnel.

The cause may be different:

  • Vehicle arm in the tunnel
  • Tunnel accident
  • Maintenance work in the tunnel
  • traffic jam or strong traffic
  • a heavy transport just passed
  • etc.

I think flashing lights are more noticeable than continuous lighting. So you get more attention

blinking is a warning device – although I often see nothing to warn.
