Want to learn how to create your own laser show/light show?

Dear festival freaks,

Since I love and live techno/hardcore, I want to build a (small) stage in my garden and want to do everything I can to learn how to set something like that up professionally for my own use.

My question is, how and where can I acquire this knowledge without having to become a lighting technician? Does anyone know of any good explanatory videos/manuals/recommendations for PA systems and lasers, fog machines, scaffolding, etc.? Or are there any good contacts I can turn to? The budget can be a bit higher, around €25,000 to €30,000, if anyone here knows what they're talking about.

Best regards

Hello!

Such a coincidence, as a technician, hobby DJ and PC-Bastler, I also deal with laser show systems. In addition to finished lasers, I also own variants. So it came to me that I am also a “laser protection officer” or that I have just filed the necessary examination and gained expertise and proved it.

I can tell you in advance that you can forget the idea with the “garden”. At first you would anyway need a certain expertise or I recommend that any person! On the other hand, it is not easy to use a “laser system” in the garden for fun and possibly influence or endanger other people or the airspace.

There are strict rules in public enclosed spaces, which must then be complied with by the operator and removed from the TÜV. In concerts, open-air events, etc., clear rules apply. Publicly and in the “Free” this goes, but you have to consider many points.

I know myself in the PA, DJ, laser and light range. I own a lot of technology and have my experience with certain products, brands and models.

“Learning by doing” I have implemented. At the same time, handbooks were rolling, I pulled videos in on YouTube and read them on various forums or asked one or the other question. In combination with this, I taught and learned various things.

You speak two areas (laser and light show). Although you can combine both, I still see both categories separately.

I also started small with a small mirror ball, a PAR spot and a motor color changer. As a teen, you don’t have so much money.

Is that a good idea with the garden? You will certainly get problems with neighbors due to the light, laser and volume. And, as you can’t just shoot so wild with lasers in the sky or generally around the area, I see problems. Except you have a big tent in the garden and integrierst there everything.

The topics are so extensive.

On the one hand, there are presets, on the other hand, you can easily “create” show automatically by software or control it by DMX etc. You can also automate everything conveniently and switch to BEAT etc. Color, effect, gobo, X-Y, rotation etc. USB-DMX and/or a DMX Pult.

I would recommend a hand for light design. Not just so all effects, scanners, moving heads, strobes, lasers, decoding elements, neon tubes, LEDs, beamers, blinds, ColorChanger, LED tubes etc. fire at the same time.

I have traverses of “GlobalTruss” and I am very happy with it. I use the 3-point, 2-point and 4-point traverses. Fits connectors, corners, holders, clamps etc.

I have laser systems from KVANT and use DMX and ILDA laser control software from Pangolin. There are also other laser brands/models and free as well as more cost-effective programs, but depending on the budget and application, every user must decide. I always think that you should buy a taste before, then have more fun and no abdominal pain in the longer term.

There are also many videos online (YouTube), websites, manuals.

Look around for DMX, ILDA.
Laser control software (Laserworld, Pangolin, HE Laserscan, etc.) There are also many videos. How to create shows, programmed, everything automated, bundled etc.

Try some products on site (music house).

For PA I chose “JBL”. Last year I enjoyed a new SET or the new series from the PRX series. I recommend DIr. The SRX series is even more extensive, but costs much more.

Fog machines and Hazer I have from “Antari”.

Depending on the budget, you need to look at what you want. Don’t save at the wrong end. I’ll have fun.

Also think about any licenses and additional hardware. Often it is not done to buy only one laser. For example, I had to buy a laser, then pay the software extra and the interface (Dongle). There are of course SETS that include the interface (dongle) and software.

For Pangolin Beyond Ultimate + USB/ILDA interface I have approx. 5500 € paid, but this is a lifetime license. You can choose between different license types (hardware/PC or Internet). I have the independent hardware variant. Then you don’t have a laser. Among other things, I use the KVANT Clubmax RGB xxx, which also cost almost 6500 €. Depending on the performance class and “Scanner”, the price can be up to € 12,500 at the latest version with 90kpps scanners. You certainly do not need as a beginner, because even “smaller” performance classes are sufficient. It doesn’t have to be a 6.5W laser.

I just wanted to mention it. KVANT is good. Laserworld also has good RGB lasers, which then also cost money.

There are also videos and handbooks.

You can get in there.

My advice: Don’t buy a china waste or save at the wrong end. Good products just cost money and you can’t just do it anymore, but just have more fun.

Otherwise, “Learning by doing”. You play around with software and see what suits music and environment design. With EDM, Techno and Co. I also use videowalls and beamers. Take it easy.

Depending on the song/voice just laser, scanner, movinghead, effects, mixed, single.

Watch different videos from events. You can also be inspired. For example, “Defqon” videos. Construction, degradation, excerpts, aftermovies etc.

Thank you for your nice comment. Very much.

Yes, I started “small” in the basement or my room.

If you have any questions, always get it. I certainly still know one or other trick or can tell DIr some purpose experience.

So if you want to spend money for anything from MA Lighting (Full Size and so is of course not in your budget, but Command Wing or Fader Wing gets you between 3000 (Fader Wing) and 6000 (Command Wing) Euro, the software is free): you will find really good YouTube tutorials, I can now really quite good lighting technology only from these tutorials. But depending on what you’re going to do, it might be easier to get some more software
