The IP range of the VPN network must

  • be different from your local network in your home network
  • be another than that of the network work in which you actually find yourself.

Example:

You have the IP range 192.168.178.xxx at home. Then your VPN cannot assign IP addresses from this range.

Let’s say your VPN delivers IP addresses from 192.168.179.xxx. Then the network in which you are right now and want to connect to the VPN cannot use this IP range.

Is that guaranteed?

This is not necessarily a “must”, but more a “why pretty”.

At least, it should be ensured that VPN and DHCP server address areas do not overlap. Otherwise, it can bang.

My theory is that my laptop is looking in the wrong network.

Of course this is the problem…

The addresses 192.168.178.135/24 and 192.168.178.48/24 are both in the same subnet.

Therefore all traffic from 192.168.178.135 to 192.168.178.48 goes directly to the local network and not via the VPN.

So you’d have to switch your home network to another subnetwork.
