Explain change of study in interview?
Hi guys,
I just had my interview…I dropped out of college at the time and then completed another one. I told the truth, namely that I didn't fail the exams (that was the HR person's question), but that I took a break for family reasons and then couldn't imagine pursuing that career path anymore. However, I started and completed a degree program that interested me much more. Then one HR person looked at the other and said, "So, it was motivational." I didn't say anything else because it happened so quickly and I was nervous.
I just got an offer…but was that a bad thing? Should I have made something up? Is it okay to make it sound like a lack of motivation? It doesn't seem that bad, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten the offer…but what do you think? Ultimately, it was the truth, and I don't really see anything wrong with it.
Moin.
I think you interpret too much. Possibly, the personnel only wanted to know if you can answer this question at all. I mean, maybe he kind of doubted the authenticity of your resume.
In any case, it is always better to answer with the truth than with a construct. In the end, it doesn’t matter why you did or didn’t do anything, it’s more important that you stand for yourself.
If I’m in a job interview, then I’m sure that’s what Schnurz is, if the applicant has stopped studying sometime and why. The main thing is to find out if the applicant can do what we wrote the job for.
But I’m not a human being, maybe I have a different look at it.
Great success with the new place.

Thank you! I also think that it was not meant negatively at all🤔 Motivation is not really a bad reason
I find that a bad answer that sounds even more negative than the guess of the staffer or at least raises more questions than it answers.
How can I imagine?
“So, I’m studying architecture, it’s me and I can keep it loose.”
… a year later…
“Now I need a break!”
… a year later…
“Now I’m studying biology!”
It just doesn’t seem credible to me.
You’ll be in my mind too.
Well! So you don’t care.
But what else should you say? I mean, I didn’t pass exams, even though I had everything in truth until just before graduation…
“My first course of study even fell very easily and was definitely an interesting option for me. During my studies, I learned how to realistically assess my talents and realized that I can see my future in the new profession and offer more added value to both myself and my potential employer.”
Sounds good, but I also said that I met all the requirements during my first study. So in the end, only the degree was still pending. In fact, people often hear that pauses in the CV also cause family situations. And thought honesty lasts the longest. If you couldn’t think about what you’re writing… yes, he could have thought about his talents.
It was crucial that you have successfully completed the second study. I believe that the question you call here has no influence on the already fixed positive decision.
Do you think that my answer wasn’t quite bad?
The answer was fine. However, you could have made more specific references to the study content and your career goals.
