volver = turn, turn, turn, turn around

That means as much as “back”.

devolver un libro = return a book

devolverse = also return, return, return

se devuelve un error = an error is returned
literally ‘a mistake returns’.

volver is often used when you want to say” etw. again”. e.g. Vuelvo a llamarle, I call him again. It is more frequently used than the prefix which is not always clear in Spanish, e.g. rebajar does not “slow again” but only “slow”

devolverse is more regional, less known There is still a lot more, that is “to manage to help” and quite practical, e.g.Yo me puedo desenvolver en espaƱol.
