Contraception and antibiotics?
I had sex last Thursday and I'm taking the pill. I have to take antibiotics today because of an infection. The information says that antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness of the pill and that you should use additional contraception while taking the antibiotics. Does the pill still work against pregnancy because of last Thursday? I'm a little worried now. I hope someone has had a similar experience.
Welcome to the community of GF – one, two, three, now also you :))
Hello, the usual, commonly prescribed antibiotics interact NOT the disadvantage of our “pill”; this is “Old School” and has since been sooo clearly refuted by scientific studies that all the literature known to me assumes that it is No Impairment of the pill effect. For the international experts of the World Health Organization, the issue of pills and antibiotics, such as in the USA or the United Kingdom, is no longer a topic; Nowadays, however, -joyingly – more and more pill manufacturers in their package leaflets are no longer talking about a danger to the pill effect by taking very normal antibiotics.
>>I have now gotten a little fear?<<
Too wrong, as explained in more detail above. :
What is the ABDA database? For pharmacies is the ABDA database the scientific backbone in the advice of patients and medical practices. With it, undesirable effects of drugs can be recognized and prevented even before use. Hospitals and medical practices are now also using this information.
I’ve just let my own pill, the Belara, run over this database and tested it, my Belara, for a possible interaction with the 5 common and most prescribed antibiotic products: amoxicillin, cefuroxime, ciprofloxacin, cotrimoxazole and doxycycline.
For ALL antibiotics mentioned here and tested with my pill appeared under a thick green checker: For the medicines you enter in our database no interactions displayed. – You can try it yourself with your pill and your antibiotic!

Only the antibiotic Rifampicin (commercial name, for example, Eremfat) is tolerated not with our hormonal oral contraceptives. However, this AB is only prescribed in very serious diseases, such as tuberculosis, lepra or meningitis. This is also displayed in the ABDA database by a thick red exclamation mark. – Many greetings, Imke =)
Not every antibiotic affects the effect of the pill (you can at best learn from the respective package inserts) and an additional prevention is recommended depending on the individual case.
Because of possible interactions of pill & antibiotics, meaningful research results are still missing (always) as there are a variety of different antibiotics and pills. And not every manufacturer checks all possible preparation combinations for interactions.
For this reason, you should be given to the doctor or pharmacist when the pill and other medicines are taken together – this is not for free in the use information – and then usually gets recommendations for action.
There are studies that see the simultaneous use of pill and antibiotics as safe. However, far more scientific results show that antibiotics and pills interact in the body. According to them, the effect of the pill can be reduced and women can become unintentionally pregnant.
If you want to be safe on number, you should also avoid using condoms during the use of the antibiotic and then up to the intake of 7 drug-containing pills in a row – depending on the intake week it is better (and faster), then leave the break.
Sexual intercourse before taking an antibiotic is not a risk, according to today’s knowledge. For if the antibiotic should actually influence the effect of the pill, it does not put the contraceptive effects on a blow out of combat.
If the antibiotic is taken exclusively in the take-off period of the pill and then there is no diarrhea, additional prevention is not necessary.
Clinically relevant interactions with oral contraceptives have hitherto been shown only for a few substances, such as antiepileptics, antimicrobial substances, currant preparations and the antiemetic agent aprepitant.
In most cases, the data situation (still) is unclear.
Antibiotics such as penicilline, cephalosporins, tetracycline, neomycin, chloramphenicol, fusidic acid, sulphonamides, nitrofurantoin or metronidazole can cause an interruption of the enterohepatic circulation of the sex steroids by killing the deconjugating intestinal bacteria.
This effect depends on the intestinal flora and the sensitivity of the corresponding intestinal bacteria to the respective antibiotic and therefore difficult to predict in individual cases.
Therefore, the recommendations vary according to source.
German doctor’s leaf: additional prevention during the time of taking the interacting drug and seven days beyond.
The ABDA database is very careful here and recommends: up to the end of the cycle and a week in addition.
The WHO and American and English guidelines do not recommend additional prevention.

An interaction check on the Internet can also be helpful.
Happy for you!
So I don’t need to worry about last Thursday? Just take care of it
Right!
Thank you for your friendship request!
I am really looking forward to any positive assessment. But please let me understand that I have “friends” exclusively in real life.
Last Thursday has been too long since there’s something going on.
While taking AB, however, please actually take care because the medicines ( pills and antibiotics) use the same transport proteins in the blood to distribute themselves in the body and since the antibiotic can displace the pill.
Okay, because it’s just four days that made me feel so little. Thank you.
it may be – under perfect conditions that spermien remain fruitful for 4-5 days, but it also takes until the antibiotic begins to work 1-2 days – and in the medium one starts from 48 hours of procreation of sperm… so no fear should happen.
Okay, thanks
Hello ZebraFlower
You can only get pregnant in the first week.
If the antibiotic affects the protection, you are no longer protected. However, you have to additionally prevent the next 7 uninterrupted days of taking pills after putting off the antibiotic. The pill Qlaira is 9 days.
Greetings HobbyTfz
Today is the fourth day and I started the antibiotic today
Then you can be pregnant by GV in the last 7 days
Thursday’s already fired.
This would have to be especially agile supermannsperms that could survive SO long.
