Use a USB stick for Proxmox as a backup disk?

Hello everyone,

I'm stuck on a problem that I haven't been able to solve for hours. I want to create backups on my Proxmox server. So far, no problem. The only problem is that it would be pretty stupid to save them on the same SSD as the server. I also want the backups to be on an external storage device—in my case, a USB stick. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the USB stick to select the storage device in the backup window, regardless of tutorials or online instructions.
Can someone help me and explain to me what I generally need to do with storage media so that Proxmox can use them?
Greetings
Fabi

You can format it as ZFS and then follow most of this article. But make a backup to the SSD first. It worked for me that way (also on USB). Best regards.

USB sticks aren't suitable as backups. They can permanently lose data.

You should use an HDD as a backup.

Classic conventional HDDs are no longer very expensive these days.

Even NVME forgets information over time, so it can't be stored forever.
