I've been a passionate stoner for years, but I was never really familiar with bongs. I finally ordered one and was excited to try it out. After more research, however, I found out that the chillum/downpipe isn't actually the part where the herbs go; instead, you put a bowl on top. Since I didn't order one, I'm wondering if I can use the downpipe for this somehow, and if it would work without smoking a separate bowl?

Yeah, you can do that. Also chillum, which are firmly connected to the head. Generally, however, I would recommend to buy a head for it over short or long.
