Flash memory like those installed in SSDs, USB sticks or other memory cards keep their information about load states. With time, however, the storage cells lose your charge (as with a battery) and thus your information. Therefore, you should really connect the drives, sticks or memory cards to a PC from time to time for 1-2 hours, so that the controller can check and refresh the cells.

The advice of optical storage media is also to be enjoyed with caution. Although in the case of Rohlingen, durabilitys of 100 years were already promised, in practice, this is also the end after about 5-10 years. The reason is that the blanks react to air and oxidize. Unless you use special archive blanks that should have a significantly longer shelf life, but also you should not rely too much on their shelf life.

The same also applies to all magnetism-based memories, even a magnetic field is not stored forever.

Therefore, all backup methods are always refreshed according to max 2. Years sensible.

The only data carriers that are really reliable in the long term are data carriers that work mechanically. Pressed optical storage media (as long as their reflective layer is preserved), perforated cards and records are good storage media as long as the carrier medium is protected and preserved.

Funny, I got my 15-year-old phone out, had no electricity for 15 years, still goes. And all the data is on it. ….

What is this? 15 years without electricity. … The same with my 10 years old 512MB USB stick.

from my experience, the correct storage, that is, not in the great sun, are pre-used, yet burned CDs are the best way for data backup. Problem: you need to maintain an optical drive.
