Hello,

This depends on the USB connection and the medium. 2.5″ HDDs come with a simple 5V/0.5A USB port, 3.5″ need 12V/2A

How much Watt has a USB port?

By default, USB provides only a voltage of five volts and, depending on the specification, a current of 0.5 ampere to five amperes (USB 2.0 to 3.1 Gen2 only via the type C plug). This allows a maximum power at USB 3.1 Gen2 of 25 Watt.

There are external drives that have only one USB port and no additional power supply.

I have both.

The HDD that only runs through the USB needs two ports because of the power consumption. In addition, it also nucleates the laptop empty.

The HDD with power supply needs a socket near, but does not load the laptop battery.
