Upgrade with SSD?
Hello,
I wanted to upgrade my PC with an SSD, but I'm not sure if my motherboard has enough space for it, and if so, what exactly I need. My purpose is gaming.
It is already equipped with an SSD and an HDD.
My motherboard: ASRock H310CM-HDV/M.2, https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H310CM-HDVM.2/index.de.asp#Specification
If necessary, I can explain further specifications or attach photos.
Basically, the following connections are available for storage on your motherboard:
If the M.2 slot is occupied with an M.2 SATA SSD, the SATA3_3 port is disabled.
USB or the two PCIe 2.0 x1 slots could theoretically still be used for memory. However, both are not recommended. USB is not really intended for internal storage and the PCIe slot is even somewhat slower than SATA.
At the PCIe 3.0 x16 slot I assume there is a graphics card in it.
Your planned Samsung 980 Pro is much too overkill for your motherboard. In general, the question is whether it really needs to be a PCIe 4.0 SSD. In practice, it is difficult to find a difference to a good PCIe 3.0 SSD.
In your case, you are only on PCIe 2.0. Your M.2 slot has a maximum bandwidth of 2 GB/s (PCIe 4.0 x4 can be almost 8 GB/s). In practice, it will be a bit below it. The 980 Pro is given in the letter in comparison with up to 7 GB/s in reading or up to 5 GB/s. Even if the maximum bandwidth is not everything, you will throw away some power at the 980 Pro.
Since you already have an M.2 SSD and the (fast) ports on the motherboard are limited, I would recommend a 2.5 inch SATA SSD.
If you want to create a new motherboard, CPU and RAM in the near future, you might consider the Samsung 980 Pro as an early investment.
You can even buckle an M-2 on it.
Downstairs is the connection.

Do I need an adapter card or does it go directly to the motherboard?
Go straight.
You okay?
You can either get the old m.2 ssd out and a bigger one in. But if you only have it, you still have to replant Windows (from the old to the new SSD). You can also easily connect any HDD or SSD via SATA cable.
Unfortunately, my current SSD is already on the line. So they get out and upgrade or 2.5 inch SSD? Right?
Very nice. So I could just get these in? https://www.samsung.com/de/memory-storage/nvme-ssd/980-pro-pcle-4-0-nvme-m-2-ssd-1tb-mz-v8p1t0bw/
