A RTW (Rettungswagen) is suitable for emergency use. An ambulance is less well equipped and is usually used for transfer.

Generally speaking, both usually have the same meaning.

It doesn’t matter. Oma Gertrud can also drive you to the hospital with a broken arm and non-open break. It’s not an emergency!

An ambulance is a vehicle in which a person can also be transported lying (without care).

A RTW is a vehicle with complete equipment for medical emergencies. A doctor may be present immediately or in an accompanying vehicle.

“Krankenwagen” is not a defined and meaningful term.

RTW and KTW and NAW are standardised.

All three are called ambulances in the Volksmund.
