For the first time, if it is not known, hybrid plants are not basically sterile.

However, there are some cases where sterility is a side effect of cross-section, but the mechanisms behind it are sometimes not sufficiently well known and not all sterile hybrids are the same mechanisms, so that “genic measures” could only be developed with difficulty.

In the case of distant relative plants, i.e. from different taxa, the different number of chromosomes can be a reason, in the case of close relatives it can be the specific combination of alleles.
