UL license or PPL A?
Hello everyone,
I have decided to get my UL pilot's license. However, I am also planning to get a license for real airplanes at some point, which is not an option at the moment due to the significantly higher costs.
The relatively simple upgrade to the PPL N is out of the question, as I live close to the border and would also like to fly abroad. My question now: Shouldn't I do PPL A straight away and then retrain for UL? That way I could fly UL first, leave the PPL "dormant" and "reactivate" it relatively easily at any time if necessary (eg by taking an additional test?). I would continue to gain flying experience with the UL. Is this possible?
Advantages: – i would have the passenger license immediately – i would only have to take 1 practical and theoretical test in the long term – overall cheaper than UL later PPL license ?
What do you think about these ideas?
Many thanks for your answers!
Hi.
you will probably trigger a philosophical discussion. Therefore, I wouldn’t want to present you a solution, but just give you a few ideas.
PPL-N’s total bullshit, I agree.
To the cost: Is it really cheaper after the UL bill later to make the PPL A? As far as I remember, you can only have the theoretical examination (if you do the PPL A directly) calculated on the training. I don’t think you can calculate any hours and what doesn’t work with UL hours to get an SEP class rating. This is only possible between SEP and TMG, therefore zero advantage. If you’re flying UL’s, the PPL is gone. Of course, with UL flight experience you will march through the PPL A training quite quickly, but if I look at how much at least at my airfield the price difference between UL and a favorable E-Class flyer, such as DA20, then I can hardly imagine that this is going to happen. In addition to the money, it is also necessary to take into account the time effort. I’d just figure it out.
Secondly, the big question UL or not UL. In addition to all the well-known advantages, I see the charge as a big problem. Only a few UL pilots I know do not give too regularly overloaded, so to fly illegally. Other problem, depending on which country you want to fly, you are not welcome everywhere with UL. There are many interesting small grass pitches in the UL. You also have to answer the question whether you want to fly, or with people and luggage “away”. I fleee e-class machines and often finds a pity to not catch all the crazy UL seats. You can go to any airport, you have something.
Even if UL pilots stone me: I personally find the PPL A training more comprehensive and thus more thorough. This hasn’t hurt anyone yet and – respect prejudice – the aviation behavior that the UL pilots put in place at our place confirms my attitude to the new one.
Last idea: You can do a PPL A not only on E-Class machines (Piper, Cessna, DA20, etc.) with the class rating SEP but also on motor skaters in the class TMG. There are very modern patterns, for example the Super Dimona. It flies better than any Cessna or Piper, has a super charge, is considered airright as a plane and not as an air sports device and is nevertheless very favorable. Maybe there is this possibility for you. If you want to go to larger E-Class machines later, you just have to fly a small class rating check on SEP.
I hope the confusion is complete 🙂
Hello to everyone, as the question and the answers are already somewhat older, I answer here once, as some things are no longer quite up to date. The law has changed a little.
PPL-N is no longer available, but it is valid throughout Europe.
For the question PPL or LAPL or Ultralight (SPL): others have answered very well. If you don’t need to invent the wheel twice: surf the search terms: pilot ticket cost ultralight homepage.
Then you will find at least two websites that provide very detailed information on this subject and make a decision easier.
Greetings
Hello,
I started meime training with the UL appearance, but the theory examination right (PPL A). This was recognized at the time at ́m UL Schein. Of course BZF II…
The biggest disadvantage is actually the lack of passenger rating and, of course, the possibility of using larger rails for excursions.
Flight practice can be collected abundantly and inexpensively with the UL … but alone …
The upgrade can be done in parallel. Which way to get involved would I discuss with the flight school.
… Today I even own an art flight rating and fly Extra 300 and next 330. Some impressions can be found on my homepage.

I did the fcl. Important for you: M hours (so ul) cannot be calculated on ppl hours.
