Turtles?

Hello,

I have two baby Greek tortoises. They're 3.5 years old, and we previously had a very small terrarium. About three weeks ago, we got a huge one, and since they've been in there, they haven't eaten anything. They've eaten once so far. And I've thought about everything in the terrarium. There's nothing they don't like. Do you have any idea what could be wrong?

Since your attitude is not art-friendly, it can be that the turtles react to it or already feel the first health consequences. Because of the unfavorable diet, it would be useful to have the veterinarian examined the cot first. Incorrect diet promotes the reproduction of parasites. Depending on the result, a worm fight would occur.

Turtles are local animals. The smaller the animals, the more important is a stable environment. A move is associated with a lot of stress, because even if it was well meant and enlargement of the place offer is also correct, the turtles must completely reorient themselves. Since they are light prey in nature, it is vital to live very hidden at the beginning and only when “the air is pure”, to move piece by piece into open zones to eat, sun and for activity. Their behaviour can therefore be a reaction to the local change, which, however, is time-limited.
Note here, the setting of the terrarium: A lot of outdoor space promotes stress while a lot of planting promotes well-being.

Another cause, and this is the main problem, is the wrong attitude. Greek land turtles never belong (!) to a terrarium, not in the past as an emergency solution. A terrarium is the worst form of posture. As far as I follow your comment history, you only use a thermal lamp in technology, so there is no UV supply and no daylight lamp. Thus, the terrarium is too dark, and without UV light, many diseases are promoted. So lettuce is in order to grow with lion’s tooth in summer, but not a kind of food. They lack many vitamins and raw fiber, which damages the intestinal flora and promotes diseases.

First of all, I would recommend that you free the turtles from the terrarium as soon as possible. Due to weather conditions, there is no external attitude possible, but a natural room enclosure is better than a terrarium. A large cage would be possible and the current dimensions should not be underestimated. Offer earth as ground floor, rosemary/Lavendel/ Sage/ Thymian as planting. Your heat lamp should reach 30-35°C locally, but outside the heat cone should not exceed 20°C. Offer a UV lamp (e.g. Bright Sun Desert or Solar Glo) as well as a daylight lamp (HQI radiator 150W). A location on the south facing window supports daylight. Don’t feed iceberg and head salad, prefer bitter salads. Complete with Golliwoog. Keep in mind that salads are just an emergency solution. Various wild herbs are always preferable. In July and August these dried and dried.

A video to keep inside can help https://youtu.be/17GJISWnnt4?si=UR3Dj5npwoxlWXF6 also this page for interior https://www.landschildkroeten-stall.com/maintenance/

Get good literature, for example this literature tip https://landschildkroeten-shop.jimdofree.com/literatur/die-griek-landschildkr%C3%B6te/

Plan your investments and work so that during April your favorites will be able to get an outside move. In addition to the Mediterranean outdoor area, you also need an early beet equipped with technology. The majority of current plants and technology can then move there. Also plan to build an overwintering mine, because the winter star is part of an appropriate attitude, it strengthens the immune system, promotes health and well-being. Since the overwintering mine is the most natural and healthiest form of overwintering, now the opportunity would be to prepare you for the next winter. Please consider: Only a lasting external attitude is art-friendly. If you and/or your parents cannot or do not want to do this, it would be better to separate from the animals. There are turtle types suitable for indoor use, but all European land turtles belong not to. The longer you continue the current attitude, the worse it will be for health and well-being, you could even call it legal animal torture. Since your parents have responsibility for you and your animals, they have not only a role model but also the responsibility. To close, it would have fatal consequences. They should not transfer responsibility and guilt to you, but with you seek, promote and implement an improvement of attitude.

Last but not least, here all the requirements for posture are summarized in a short report https://odysee.com/@landschildis:f/hkm:a

Maybe a normal reaction to the winter star. You bought them in autumn, so the time when turtles actually prepare for the stars. Also in the first year of life.Your cycle has already been confused with the previous owner. You should inform you about the kind attitude that animals bring to the doctor and let them check on parasites or the like…at the end you will surely come to a conclusion. Either improve the posture condition and not a terrarium, but an open mind, even if it is so small, you can improve and expand a lot later. Or you will come to the reasonable decision to release the animals. I’m sorry, it always makes me sad when I read something like that….

It’s okay, don’t take my answer badly. I made many mistakes with the turtles as a beginner. But I realized it myself, turned it off early and improved. Reading by books alone and now the internet. And I don’t think you’ll learn how to use turtles in life. Talk to a doctor’s visit with the family. It’s wonderful animals and it’s a shame if they die. Do you understand? There are also turtle forums where you can always make you smart.

  1. Greek land turtles cannot be kept in a terrarium as appropriate. There it is too tight, too warm and too dry.
  2. With 3.5 years, they’re not babies anymore. How much do your animals weigh now?
  3. During this season these animals belong to the winter stars. My Greeks are buried in the garden. So it can have countless reasons why they don’t eat now. It can be too cold, it can be too dry, it can be parasites or the bad posture is now growing (lever and kidney failure).
  4. What are you offering to the animals? What kind of lamp do you have?

They may prepare to die. A few years they can certainly be kept alive in a bad stance, but at some point it’s over.

Before I write a lot of things here again, there are a few questions. (In my opinion, these animals are NOT children’s hands!)

What would you be willing to do for the health and survival of the animals? Would you give them away if you know they’d be better off somewhere else?

Do you have a garden?

Do you have someone to help you?

On the subject of cost there is a rough summary in the video https://youtu.be/tQifrhopkQ?si=u6BhXWR9baZP8t8k

There are people who know each other and take turtles to overwinter. If yours survive the summer, it might be a way.

If you can’t keep the animals properly, you should leave them. Everything else would be animal torture. You can watch them die. Great.

So you’re an animal freak, because you’re a animal cruelty, so you’re such people?

All right.

At the moment, I only see two possibilities.

1. You want to be out of pure stubbornness and because they are so cute the animals are kept without what to do.

Two. You do the only right thing and give it to experienced hands.

I guess she’s staying at Solution 1 and so I’m out of here. It’s always the same thing on the subject..

Your parents don’t want to keep or leave the animals properly? Convince them! Please!

Would you hold a goldfish in the mice cage? No? That’s right.

The same thing just happens with your turtles. You can NOT keep them in the apartment without suffering. This is animal torture.

Every animal has certain requirements. And if I can’t implement it as a holder, the animal must be delivered. Without if and but.

As I said, if it is not possible to keep the animals, give them away.

There is no other way. All these are actually the questions you are dealing with before getting such animals.

Okay.

Tomorrow you will order the book “solid tank, soft heart” by Thorsten Geier. There’s everything you need to know.

From Saturday we go to the garden, weather should be good. You need a decent open bed with heated breakfast. Everything else is animal cruelty and sooner or later leads to the death of the animals.

You can throw the terrarium on the trash Easter, and then your turtles can live outside.

If all this is not possible, put them in experienced hands.

because it doesn’t have to be kept as it should be. You need a large outdoor walk in the garden with an early beet, and a turtle-just furnishings of the walk. It is always bad to read that still so many animals are kept away from their needs, because holders do not have the trouble to acquire a lot of knowledge about a responsible attitude. This species doesn’t belong to any terrarium.
