Tempus newspaper analysis?

Hey people,

This is a question for grammar nerds. I've always considered myself one, but right now I'm so confused…

It's about my master's thesis. Some chapters consist of newspaper analyses. In theory, I'm perfectly clear about which tense should be used when: To summarize and analyze the content of articles, you use the present tense, and to describe historical events, you use the past tense. But then there's also the historical present tense, which makes the text sound more fluid in some ways.

To cut a long story short: In practice, my gut feeling sometimes seems inconsistent. But when I try to correct the inconsistencies, the sentences suddenly sound wrong to me.

Here are a few examples of sections I'm unsure about:

"At the same time, mentions of Mendelssohn in general decrease sharply. In August, in the newspaper quoted above… there is a short advertisement for a free organ concert:" – take or took ?

"More than a year passes before the next relevant article, verifiable from the sources, is published: In March 1944, the … points to an upcoming church event." – passed or passes ?

"In February 1943, … dedicated an article to another funeral service in which a piece by Mendelssohn was performed. Among other things, music "from Elias van Mendelssohn" was played." – dedicated or dedicates ?

"A few months later, the "Beati Mortui," apparently popular at funerals, is mentioned once again. At the funeral of a long-standing and prominent member, the sang that very work, reports the…" – is or was ?

"At the end of September, Lou van Strien lists various musicians: … Referring to Salomone Rossi, the author adds :" – counts or counted ?

"A short time later, things looked different; in the meantime, the was founded, which was only allowed to play music by composers of Jewish descent. According to the …, the very first concert was entirely dedicated to Mendelssohn:" – here is a paragraph that sounds correct to me if it is written entirely in the present tense or entirely in the past tense.

"In the following weeks, mentions of Mendelssohn are largely limited to concert programs. A notable exception is the December 12 issue of the Wochenblatt. Here the composer's name appears in no fewer than five articles, three of which are of particular relevance for various reasons. In a concert review, Lou van Strien writes about a performance of the " – limit or limited ?

"At the beginning of January 1942, Lou van Strien spoke more enthusiastically than before about Mendelssohn, specifically about his string octet:" – speaks or expressed ?

I think you see my problem. Whenever I mention both the publication date and the content of the article in the same sentence, the present tense sounds right to me. If it's just about the publication or the story, the past tense sounds right to me. And if the entire paragraph is in the present tense (see, for example, "In the following weeks…" and "At the same time…"), I instinctively want to use the historical present tense in the first sentence as well.

Is my gut feeling on the right track or are there some fundamental errors somewhere?

Thanks in advance for your help.

My judgment: in fact everything in praesens historicum write, with one exception: at the place »Another funeral where a piece of Mendelssohn was listed, dedicated … in February 1943 an article» you even take the plush fect: “…was performed, dedicates…”

This seems to be a really great job; I’ll push you the thumbs! I would like to read them in the end :-))

Greetings!
