I always read that atoms strive for eight valence electrons to achieve the most stable state possible, but I never get a clue as to why. Atoms don't have a will; there must be something explainable behind it. Does anyone know anything about this?

Weil die Schalen ab einen bestimmten Punkt nicht erst der Reihe nach aufgefüllt werden sondern, dem Energieniveau nach. Dazu kommen noch die Schalen aus den Nebengruppen
