Teeth chafing while breastfeeding?

When I breastfeed my daughter, her two lower teeth rub so badly that I can hardly stand it. I've often heard that normally you shouldn't notice them. Does anyone know this problem? Since she refuses the bottle, I'm forced to continue breastfeeding.

Hello, perhaps your baby isn't latching on properly anymore. Try squeezing the front of the breast a little before latching on – a bit like a sandwich πŸ™‚ – and then let the baby latch on. This should help the breast go back into the mouth a little deeper, and the biting should then stop. Depending on your child's age, you can also talk to them. If you've been breastfeeding for a long time, you can tell them that otherwise, it will hurt mom and that drinking milk won't work. Then just talk to your little one about how you need their help and that they should please open their mouth again, because otherwise their teeth will hurt their breasts. Good luck and best wishes, Kati.

You can try using a nipple shield, but the baby may not accept it.

However, it would be better to position it differently. The teeth shouldn't actually interfere or rub during breastfeeding if the baby has the nipple properly in their mouth.

If in doubt, ask your midwife or a breastfeeding consultant for advice.

Put on the nipple shield and you're good to go. This isn't rocket science.
