Tea tree oil and salicylic acid?
I dabbed tea tree oil on my pimples and then applied pimple gel (with salicylic acid). Is that too much?

Salicyl acid is good, I would leave the tea tree oil.
Why not a tea tree oil?

That is also true, but in much higher concentration. Products with 1-2% salicylic acid act as mild but very effective chemical peeling and are a very good choice for unclean skin.
