Is the Onkyo TX-SR 500 still any good?

Good morning.

My dad found the Onkyo TX-SR 500 in the attic, and I was thinking about connecting it to my 5.1 system. It's old, no doubt about it, but he said it used to be really good. Is it still any good these days? I have absolutely no idea. 😔

Hello!

If you have this decode station, you need the Onkyo receiver actually not.

In the sub there is full electronics to control all satellites accordingly.

There is therefore no need for an external amplifier.

If you have classic (passive) speakers, plus an active sub, such an A/V receiver makes absolutely sense.

Technically, this is a very useful device when it works.

It knows all audio formats except for the modern “HD” versions that came with the Blueray disk.

A few technical details:

https://www.fein-hifi.de/Surround-Receiver/Onkyo/Onkyo-TX-SR500E-DTS-Receiver-champagner::1039.html

I still have a similar old “Art-Verwanten” in use here: “Onkyo TX-SR 701E”. My device has a higher amplifier power (5×140W at 4Ohm-LS) and more inputs. A 5.1-LS compilation of the brand “Nubert”, from the “NuBox” series (4 ohms), plus large active Nubert sub (230W sine).

I’m still very happy with it.

I also need the now very rare 5.1 multi-channel input, so that my old Pioneer DVD player can uncompress and transmit the high-quality SACD, or DVD audio format (96-192kHz, 24bit).

Your Onkyo can do that, by the way.

And on my PC hangs (also) an old “Teufel Concept E 5.1” (without “Max”). So one or two numbers smaller than your system.

This A/V receiver is therefore “not necessarily” necessary for you if this decoder station still works properly.

But you could also use the LS onkyo receiver direct ankle and operate.

Your receiver has an output power of up to 85W per channel.

What’s on the back of the Sateliten-LS labels on what they can do?

Greeting

Martin

And how did you connect the sub?

It would have to be tapped to the left at the super-out of the receiver and this output must also be activated in the options.

Otherwise, bass goes through the front speakers.

Also, the front and rear speakers must all be defined as “small”, I believe.

Yeah.

You can only turn the volume to a limited extent.

Make a mark on the volume controller and be careful with the remote control.
