Is the first or second correct here? I know you have to swap the equatorial and axial, but does a "swap" take place otherwise?

Let us assume, for example, a longer hydrocarbon (e.g. pentane). What if this had both the eclipsed and the staggered conformation? What would you call it then, or what would you say about it? And how do conformational isomers arise and can they change themselves into the other conformation type?
