Looking for a movie? Maybe horror, thriller? Attic? Cube? Box?

I can only remember the opening scene.
A man (perhaps wearing a suit and hat) enters a house in what could be a suburban area in the US. He goes into the attic and opens or deposits a black cube (the size of a fist) (perhaps he already brought it with him) and "activates" it. The cube floats in the air, spinning it around itself. (Perhaps people die as a result…)
The film was probably released between 1990 and 2008.
But definitely before 2008.
