Stock up, only do a bulk purchase once a month?

good morning..

Do you keep a certain stock of food and toiletries/cleaning supplies?

I usually have everything in the house that's non-perishable, enough to last me about 3-4 weeks (or longer for some things). However, I must say that we live outside of town, and it's a long drive to do a big shop. Example:

Flour

Sugar

Salt

Powdered milk

Milk

various canned goods

mashed potatoes

Meat (frozen goods… or it is re-portioned and then packaged)

and much more

Jein

Edeka, Penny, Rewe, Aldi and a little further even a metro are all within a 5-10 minute walk.

However, we do buy some things in advance, for example when meat, fish, etc. are on offer, and then we freeze them. It's definitely worth it, especially for larger quantities. It saves money and they last a long time in the freezer, which is what we do.
Large pieces are portioned and frozen accordingly.

Shopping once a month would be too little for me, especially because of the milk and bread and well, in the winter I also buy vegetables, or I would like to buy beans and bacon soon for pears, beans and bacon and I don't have any beans in the garden this year.

But overall I do keep quite a lot of stocks

a) due to special offers

b) to preserve my harvest

c) I rarely cook and always make several portions – and the rest is frozen.

But I don't go shopping more than once a week anyway, often less often and yes, it's always a journey.

And okay, when I was snowed in last winter, it was handy that I had supplies, otherwise I would have had to shovel myself out.

No, sorry. There are several fruits and vegetables that can't be harvested early and can ripen later, meaning they're not meant to be stored. A classic example: strawberries.

When it comes to stored produce, there's a crucial difference in quality and taste: There are retailers who harvest as late as possible so the produce develops its full flavor and then sells promptly, and there's the classic supermarket and discount store produce that's harvested early and stored for a long time so it can survive transport and ripen. You can taste it then, too. But if it works for you, then it's all great.

Yes, for several reasons:

1. It is recommended by the disaster management agency.

2. I buy products in bulk when they're on sale. Both dry goods and fresh items that can be frozen. I also participate in food sharing, and at times I receive so much that stocking up is worthwhile.

3. Because of my parents' garden, there are also periods of overharvesting and everything is canned for storage, some of which comes to me.

4. You never know what might happen. The coronavirus pandemic has shown this. How quickly you can find yourself in a health situation where you can't leave the house or go shopping. It doesn't even have to be coronavirus; it could be a fracture or something similar. You do have your emergency network, but I'm also quite happy not to have to rely on others.

I've always kept a certain amount of certain foods on hand, especially because I like to buy them on sale.

But I have to go to the store once or twice a week for fresh clothes. But that doesn't matter; it's only a few kilometers.
