Sprained ankle while hiking abroad, self-help or should I see a doctor?

Hi, I'm on vacation at the moment and today I twisted my ankle due to carelessness while hiking. I noticed straight away that it was different than usual. The pain shot through my whole body and I felt sick, so I laid down. A little later I took off my shoe and saw that my ankle was already swollen. I now had a lump the size of a potato on it. I took an IBU and had a bandage put on me; Unfortunately I couldn't walk on my own anymore. But since we were traveling as a group, we managed to get to our hut with crutches and thanks to help from others.

Now I'm lying here, torn. I don't really want to go to the doctor and try to regain some mobility with self-therapy. I don't want my vacation to end just like this. I've googled it and am already reassured that there's no visible bruising, so I'm optimistic that I might be able to regain mobility soon.

Do you have any helpful tips? Maybe one of you has been in a similar situation before.

I don't have any tips, but go to the doctor. Then you can be treated specifically. A small inattentiveness has happened quickly, I have hit the small toe in my own apartment on the right foot. Good improvement.

It's been a few days. So I hope you're better now.

To exclude bone injuries (eg ankle fracture) I would strongly recommend going to the doctor.

Otherwise, however, many injuries to the ankle joint (eg ligament crack) are nowadays treated rather conservatively, ie with splint from the outside and without surgery. So you should calm down, cool and protect your injury.

On holiday there are other hikes I cannot recommend at all. If a band is really torn, you only have a fraction of the force you otherwise have and increase the likelihood of re-cracking.

Oops. Good improvement!

I wouldn't risk that a splinter or tear will go through or heal it wrong! This can lead to life restrictions…

At least you were obviously with the doctor and X-ray 😉

Good improvement!!!

"Leaving the same was no longer in"

Please see the doctor. It's bitter, but safer. It doesn't have to be broken, but it's broken. I think it is unlikely

a potato-sized chub

I'm sure it won't heal in a few days.

My holiday doesn't end just like that

You can make vacation. But don't wander.

Sounds spontaneously after tape distortion. It'll take longer.
I'd say to the others, "Leave me back, you're faster without me!"
Well, maybe I'd rest for two days and see how it goes. You could still apply warm ointments. Voltaren Association.

Why don't you let it look? The hospital is so far away.

are there no translators at the cottage / hotel? Are you in Nepal? They can also keep you 2-3 day destinations with luggage.

Were you still able to move your foot with your hand without load? Was it immediately cooled?
Then warm. Take a Voltaren bandage, not too tight. Wait two days.

How far is the next doctor?

Then he was chilled.

I would actually make a light (ie not tight) volcanic bandage and just wait. You say you don't see discoloration.

You can also communicate without a translator in doubt.

I'd break off the holiday, or I'd be treated.

Are you sure you have health insurance?!

The risk of an accident is always there. The others have to calculate that. I wouldn't take any consideration in your place – your health is more important than the pleasure of others.
