Theoretically, in both cases there would be no spaces, but it is recommended to use one in more complex structures as in case 2, simply because it is more pleasant to read and understand.

Otherwise, there is almost never a space before or after the dash. In the indent (—), however, almost always.

A reminder for all days if you are not currently in the printing industry:

If the line (or an abbreviation or another character) replaces a word, it is also used as a word. And that also affects drawing around.

There's a half-fielded line ("en dash"). Without spaces.

Binding without spaces actually only comes with telephone numbers and house numbers.

You should also be so realistic to see that everyone on the keyboard uses only the minus sign and no indent.

Well, these are the usual rules in typography. Word does it automatically.
